Our research
As a Consortium we have over 200 academics working in all areas of energy related research.
Our key research themes are:
- Fuel cells, hydrogen production and storage
- Solar, wind and biomass energy
- Clean fossil fuels and carbon abatement technologies
- Demand reduction and management in buildings
- Power electronics and electrical networks
- Sustainable societies: economics, policies, practices and impacts
- Sustainable transport, advanced engines and systems
We are extensively engaged with companies, both large national and multi-national and SME's, leading to many collaborative research projects. Across the MEC we have extensive research and demonstration facilities. These include:
- £2M photovoltaics laboratory
- £3M world class engine test facilities
- £1.5M fuel cells laboratory
- £2M investment to establish world-leading laboratories in industrial scale microwave processing, hydrogen storage and carbon capture
- Unique series of creative energy dwellings
- Instrumented house for testing domestic retrofit
- Fleet of 5 hydrogen fuelled vehicles
